Fraternity Pledges $20 Million for Women’s Cancer Research (Grants Roundup)

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:

Sigma Chi International Fraternity

$20-million pledge to Huntsman Cancer Foundation for women’s cancer research, treatment, and wellness programs at the Kathryn F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care and Women’s Cancers at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, in Salt Lake City.

American Heart Association

$14 million to establish a new research network to prevent and treat arrhythmias and sudden cardiac arrest. The network includes Northwestern University, the University of Michigan, the University of Washington, and Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Wells Fargo

$2.8 million to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund to augment support services, upgrade technology, and endow scholarships.

Vanderbilt University

$2-million pledge to the National Museum of African American Music, which is scheduled to open in downtown Nashville early next year, for its archives, construction costs, and educational programs. The university says it will collaborate with the museum on a speaker series.

John Templeton Foundation

$1.8 million over three years to the University of New Orleans for research on the challenges that black entrepreneurs face in cities in the southeastern United States.

Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation

$1.5 million to Co.act to seed a new grant fund that will support capacity-building at nonprofit groups in southeastern Michigan.

Koret Foundation

$1.2 million over three years to six organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area that give military veterans access to job training, health care, work-force development, and other services that ease the transition to civilian life.

MultiCare

$1 million to Hoopfest to build new basketball courts in Riverfront Park, in Spokane, Washington.

New Grant Opportunity

The Heinz Endowments are accepting letters of inquiry for its Just Arts grants program, which will support artistic work and cultural programs that respond to social challenges and injustice in the Pittsburgh region. Small awards of $1,000 to $10,000, and large awards of to $150,000, will be made in this grant cycle. Letters of inquiry are due by August 1.
