Grants Roundup: Greek National Fire Service Gets $29 Million to Fight Wildfires

Here are notable new grant awards compiled by the Chronicle:
Anschutz Foundation
$120 million to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. The gift will support faculty recruitment and retention, research, industry partnerships, and a new health sciences building. The grant maker was founded by billionaire sports and entertainment mogul Philip Anschutz, who co-owns the National Hockey League’s Los Angeles Kings and the NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers and owns the Staples Center, where both teams play.
AbbVie
$100 million from this pharmaceutical company to Ronald McDonald House Charities to build new residential facilities and expand its programs to provide housing and support services for pediatric patients and their families. Read more of our coverage of this grant.
Stavros Niarchos Foundation
$29.3 million to the Hellenic Fire Department, in Athens, to support the firefighters who have been combating this summer’s wildfires in Greece and pay for new equipment and training programs to help prevent future forest fires.
Airbnb
$10 million to seven charities in New York. Among the grants is $1.5 million to Women in Need to provide housing and social services for homeless women and children in the city.
Scripps Howard Foundation
$6 million to the University of Maryland and Arizona State University to establish investigative-reporting centers in their journalism schools. Each university will receive $3 million over three years.
Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation
$4.6 million to Playworks to bolster its programs in southeast Michigan and western New York, including expanding access to recess and game coaching for kids age 3 and up.
Boeing
$3 million to Virginia Tech for student scholarships, experiential-learning grants, and salary support for faculty in the Discovery Program, a new collaborative-learning project in its Honors College.
Nature Conservancy
$2 million to the University of Louisville’s Envirome Institute to study the connection between access to nature and improved human health.
Craig Newmark Philanthropies
$1 million to DonorsChoose.org to match donations to buy science, technology, engineering, and math teaching materials and equipment for poor schools.
Richard King Mellon Foundation
$1 million to the Community College of Beaver County Foundation for equipment and technology to prepare graduates for careers in the petrochemical industry.
New Grant Opportunity
Huntington National Bank is offering community-development grants for charities in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, western Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Nonprofit organizations may request grants for projects in support of community and social services; economic and community development; financial education; and housing and community revitalization. Grants are awarded on a rolling basis.
