Here are notable new grants compiled by The Chronicle:

Sam Simon Charitable Giving Foundation

The estate of screenwriter and philanthropist Sam Simon has created a new, eponymous foundation that will focus its grant making on improving the treatment of animals and supporting programs that aid people affected by poverty in Los Angeles. Mr. Simon, who died in 2015 after a long battle with cancer, was best known as a co-creator of The Simpsons.

The foundation’s first grant will be $1 million to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which will use the money on a rescue fund, cruelty investigations, programs designed to build empathy for animals, and efforts to attract new donors.

H&M Foundation

$20.5 million to help three organizations share the results and importance of their work. The money will be split among Unicef, to create a tool that highlights the importance of early-childhood development; WaterAid, to share best practices about increasing access to clean water; and CARE, to create a global report about the value of women’s enterprise programs.
