Online Campaign for Orlando Victims Quickly Tops $1 Million

A crowdfunding campaign launched shortly after Sunday’s massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla., has raised more than $1.3 million to assist victims, CNN Money reports. More than 33,000 people had donated as of Monday morning to the GoFundMe drive led by Equality Florida, a nonprofit LGBT-rights advocacy group.

Ida Eskamani, an Orlando-based Equality Florida board member, said the group will work with lawyers who helped distribute donated funds following mass shootings in Aurora, Colo., and Chattanooga, Tenn., to ensure “every penny raised goes to supporting these victims.” Forty-nine people were killed and 53 injured when a gunman opened fire in the early hours of Sunday morning at the Pulse club, marking the deadliest gun attack in U.S. history.
