Microsoft Restyles Philanthropy Unit Under New Name and Leader

Microsoft announced Tuesday that it will expand its charitable activities under a newly named division, Microsoft Philanthropies, The Seattle Times and CNET report.

The organization will oversee the Redmond, Wash.-based tech giant’s existing giving programs, including donations of money and software and employee volunteerism, while seeking new avenues to work with communities, Microsoft President Brad Smith wrote in a blog post. The firm donated more than $1 billion in the most recent fiscal year.

Microsoft Philanthropies will be headed by Mary Snapp, a longtime company lawyer, and priority areas will include STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education and bridging the global gap in access to technology, a cause other tech giants such as Facebook and Google have taken up.
