House Panel Says Review of NFL’s Nonprofit Status Under Way

March 27, 2015 | Read Time: 1 minute

The House Oversight Committee is reviewing the tax-exempt status of the National Football League and 10 other sports bodies, the Huffington Post reports, citing a bipartisan letter sent to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell late Wednesday by the panel’s chairman, Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz.

The letter, co-signed by the committee’s ranking Democrat, Rep. Elijah Cummings, requests that the NFL send Congress more information regarding its designation as a nonprofit trade association by April 3 and asks whether the league “has considered voluntarily abandoning its 501(c)(6) status.” In comments after last month’s Super Bowl, Mr. Chaffetz termed the NFL “a for-profit venture” and said he intended to call Mr. Goodell to testify before his committee.
