Beneficiary: Sidney Kimmel Foundation

Background: Mr. Kimmel founded Jones Apparel Group, which was sold in 2014 to Sycamore Partners, a private-equity firm.

The Kimmels gave $115.5-million to the Sidney Kimmel Foundation. The 87-year-old businessman directed $110-million of that to Thomas Jefferson University for its medical school, which has been named for him. They directed the remaining $5.5-million to the Kimmel Scholars Program, which provides grants to young cancer researchers; the University of Missouri for its Sidney Kimmel Institute for Nuclear Renaissance; and other nonprofits.
