New House Oversight Chair Eyes NFL’s Nonprofit Status

February 3, 2015 | Read Time: 1 minute

The new chairman of the House Oversight Committee said Monday that he is likely to call National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell to testify before Congress on the league’s status as a nonprofit, CNN and UPI report. Rep. Jason Chaffetz’s comments the morning after the Super Bowl echoed a statement he issued before the game outlining plans to target the NFL and the National Hockey League, both of which are designated as tax-exempt trade associations.

“Was that a nonprofit event going on or was that a for-profit venture?” the Utah Republican said of the Super Bowl. “It’s a for-profit venture. You tell people that the NFL is a nonprofit entity and they just start laughing and giggling. But it’s not fair. If there’s another side to that, then let the commissioner come in and make that case.”
