The Portland, Maine-based Council on International Educational Exchange will give more than $20-million to an initiative to double the number of U.S. college students who study in foreign countries by 2020, the Portland Press Herald writes. The contribution announced Monday is the largest of about 450 pledges by colleges, educational associations, and other entities to the effort launched in March by the Institute of International Education in New York City.
The council operates study-abroad programs for both American and foreign students. As part of its commitment, it will double its provision of scholarships and grants over the next five years. It also plans to send staffers around the country to help students apply and pay for travel documents.
