The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation joined other HIV/AIDS organizations on Friday in expressing grief over downed Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. On board were nearly 100 passengers bound for the 2014 International AIDS Conference, according to The New York Times.

The commercial jetliner was apparently shot down Thursday over a contested region in eastern Ukraine. All 298 passengers were killed. Among them were the HIV/AIDS researchers and advocates traveling to the conference in Australia, President Barack Obama said Friday.

The victims are believed to include Joep Lange, a prominent researcher and former president of the International AIDS Society. The Pediatric AIDS Foundation said it would honor the memory of the lost advocates, researchers, and friends by continuing its work to eradicate pediatric AIDS.
