Google.org, the Internet giant’s nonprofit arm, announced the five winners Wednesday of its grant competition to try out charitable uses of the wearable computer Google Glass, USA Today reports.

The winners were chosen from among 1,300 groups that submitted ideas for using Glass in pursuing their missions. They will each get $25,000 and a free pair of the computer-equipped eyewear, which will retail for $1,500 when released for general sale.

The recipients plan to use Glass to develop hands-free video and instructional programs. They are Classroom Champions, which sends top Paralympic athletes to visit elementary schools; cancer fundraising charity 3000 Miles to a Cure; Women’s Audio Mission, which trains girls in recording and audio technology; the Hearing and Speech Agency, which serves people with hearing loss and other communication difficulties; and the Mark Morris Dance Group/Brooklyn Parkinson Group, which provides movement and exercise programs for Parkinson’s sufferers.
