Golf Events Are in Greater Play for Charity Causes

Charity golf tournaments are flowering as a way for nonprofits to attract new and often affluent supporters, writes The New York Times.
The most recent survey of charity golf by the National Golf Federation found that there were about 143,000 such tournaments in 2011, raising $3.9-billion, and nearly half of the country’s 25 million golfers played in at least one.
The tournaments are often organized and partially underwritten by a participating charity’s wealthy trustees. The proliferation of such events has fostered fierce competition to attract golfers, which can add to costs, particularly for events at elite courses that are more likely to lure players.
