Del. Town Says Charity Events Must Donate 60% of Take

June 2, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Bethany Beach, Del., council passed a resolution last week requiring that organizations running fundraisers that the seaside resort town’s facilities in the seaside resort town turn over at least 60 percent of gross proceeds to the charity beneficiaries, reports Delmarva newspaper The Daily Times.

Councilman Chuck Peterson said the rule aims to ensure increasingly popular events such as fun runs support the advertised causes. “We didn’t feel … that we should be putting town efforts and taxpayer money for an organization that’s trying to turn a profit themselves,” he said.

The council based the minimum-donation figure on the 60 percent that watchdog group CharityWatch recommends nonprofits spend on mission programs. The resolution also directs the town manager to review sponsoring organizations’ financial records.
