Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s attacks on billionaire industrialists Charles and David Koch and their network of conservative and libertarian advocacy groups are spurring wealthy Republicans donors to step up giving to pro-GOP nonprofits, according to The Washington Post.
In recent months, Reid, a Nevada Democrat, has escalated his public criticism of the Koch brothers and their financing of electoral activities, which reportedly ran to more than $400-million in the 2012 campaign cycle.
Prominent pro-Republican “social welfare” nonprofits tell the Post they are seeing a burst of cash from contributors concerned that giving to political action committees—which, unlike the advocacy groups, must reveal their donors—could make them vulnerable to similar attacks. “We’ve heard from donors that they don’t want to get ‘Koched,’” one top GOP operative said.
