Poll Finds Utahans Are Biggest U.S. Donors of Time and Money

May 14, 2014 | Read Time: 1 minute

Utah residents are the most generous with their time and money among the 50 states, according to a new Gallup poll ranking the states on donations and voluntarism, Fast Company writes.

Seventy-one percent of Utahans surveyed reporting giving funds to a cause within the last six months, 56 percent volunteered, and 48 percent did both. Minnesota, Hawaii, and South Dakota were the next most-generous states in terms of residents’ donations of both time and money, while Nevada and Kentucky ranked lowest.

The survey of some 600 adults per state, conducted from June to December last year, also found that states where people give the most also have higher percentages of residents who report feeling satisfied with their lives.

Data-driven news site FiveThirtyEight compared the Gallup results to The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s 2012 analysis of giving across America and found that actual state-by-state cash is roughly consistent with residents’ poll responses about generosity.
