Obamas’ Donations Declined to 12.3% of Income Last Year

President Obama and Michelle Obama donated $59,251 to 32 charities in 2013, a sharp drop in giving in a year that also saw their income fall, USA Today and The New York Times report, citing tax returns released by the White House Friday.
The giving represented 12.3 percent of the first couple’s adjusted gross income of $481,098. In 2012 the Obamas reported earnings of $608,611 and donated nearly of quarter of that amount to charity. The president made significantly less from sales of his books in 2013 than in the previous year. The couple paid $98,169 in federal taxes, boosting their effective tax rate from 2012’s 18.4 percent to 20.4 percent.
The Fisher House Foundation, a charity serving hospitalized veterans to which the president and first lady gave $103,000 in 2012, was the Obamas’ top recipient again last year, getting $8,751. Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, donated $20,523 on adjusted gross income of $407,009. U.S. News & World Report provides a full list of the organizations the couples supported in 2013.
