Calif. Senate Blocks Nonprofit Politicking Disclosure Bill

California’s Republican state senators blocked passage Monday of a bill that would require greater disclosure of donors giving through nonprofit groups to influence state elections, reports The Los Angeles Times.
With all GOP members voting no or not voting, the measure fell one vote shy of the two-thirds “supermajority” needed to approve it as an emergency measure, which would have allowed it take effect before this year’s elections. The Democrats lost their supermajority this month when Sen. Ronald S. Calderon took a leave of absence to fight federal bribery charges.
The bill—one of a raft of recent state proposals aimed at regulating politically active nonprofits—would require an organization to make donor information public if it spends or contributes at least $50,000 in one year or more than $100,000 in a four-year period. It could be brought back for a vote before the end of the legislative session in August, and, if approved, would take effect next year.
