The former head of counter-fraud efforts for Oxfam admitted Thursday to stealing $108,000 from the global aid organization, the BBC reports.
Prosecutors said Edward McKenzie-Green submitted invoices to Oxfam from phony companies he set up between February and December 2011, during his tenure as the U.K.-based charity’s top fraud watchdog. Oxfam’s current anti-fraud chief said the organization is attempting to recover the stolen funds.
A defense lawyer laid the scam to Mr. McKenzie-Green’s mental state, saying his client’s marriage was failing and that he had a “serious addiction to prescription medication.”
Sentencing was set for May 16.
