No. 28: Richard and Nancy Kinder

Beneficiary: Kinder Foundation

Background: Mr. Kinder is co-founder and chairman of Kinder Morgan, an energy company in Houston.

Mr. and Ms. Kinder, ages 69 and 62, respectively, gave $70.1-million to their Kinder Foundation. The couple established the foundation in 1997, and through it they primarily support green-space projects, education groups, and programs aimed at improving the quality of life in Houston.

The philanthropy has awarded grants totaling more than $230-million since its inception, including $50-million last year to the Houston Parks Board for the Bayou Greenways 2020 project, which will create 1,500 acres of new parkland in Houston and connect 150 miles of trails along the area’s bayous. It also gave $10-million to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, for a new building.
