February 10, 2013 | Read Time: 1 minute

Amount donated in 2012: about $116.4-million

Beneficiary: University of Oxford

Background: Mr. Moritz is chairman of Sequoia Capital, a venture-capital firm. Ms. Heyman is a writer and former editor at The New York Times.

Mr. Moritz, 58, and Ms. Harriet Heyman pledged about $116.4-million to the University of Oxford for scholarships for undergraduate students whose families make less than $25,000 a year.

Mr. Moritz graduated from the university in 1976 with a master’s degree in history, and his father attended Oxford on scholarship.

The couple gave Christ Church, a college at the university, $50-million in 2008.

The donors will pay the $116.4-million pledge in three installments and have thus far paid roughly $38.8-million. Each payment will be matched by the university’s investment returns from its endowment and followed by a challenge for other Oxford alumni to donate.
