Beneficiary: Claremont McKenna College

Background: Mr. Roberts is a founding partner of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Company, an international private-equity firm.

Mr. Roberts, 69, pledged $50-million to Claremont McKenna College, where he had earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1966. The pledge is unrestricted. He serves on its Board of Trustees, and in 2006 gave the institution $20-million to endow professorships.

Mr. Roberts has paid $37.2-million toward the $50-million commitment. He will pay the remainder in the coming years.
