Komen Official Resigns Over Planned Parenthood Controversy

February 7, 2012 | Read Time: 1 minute

Karen Handel, vice president for public policy at Susan G. Komen for the Cure, resigned yesterday, saying she had supported the charity’s decision to cut off support from Planned Parenthood but the move had been considered before she joined the organization and it was approved by top officials, according to the Associated Press.

Nancy Brinker, Komen’s chief executive, said that Ms. Handel did not have a significant role in the decision.

In a letter obtained by the AP, Ms. Handel said: “I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale, and my involvement in it. I openly acknowledge my role in the matter and continue to believe our decision was the best one for Komen’s future and the women we serve.”
