March 2, 2010 | Read Time: 1 minute

  • Matthew Bishop and Michael Green, authors of the book Philanthrocapitalism: How the Rich Can Save the World, write on their blog about three news outlets — Global Post, Politico, and ProPublica — that the authors say “will provide important evidence on whether social entrepreneurs can come up with business models for news that work, whether they will be self-sustaining, or whether philanthropy will be needed — and if it is, whether that giving will be forthcoming.”
  • On her personal blog Nonprofit Periscope, Elizabeth Clawson, a prospect researcher at the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center, reflects on whether her monthly contributions to a handful of her favorite charities make her a “passive donor” and how she might overcome that passivity.
  • Gayle Gifford, a nonprofit consultant, questions whether grant makers have focused too much on mergers as the solution to economic hard times, on her blog, The Butterfly Effect.
  • Bob Ottenhoff, president of GuideStar, explains on his blog why GuideStar encourages charities to post videos on its nonprofit information-gathering Web site and discusses tips from the New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof on successful storytelling.
  • Janet Camarena, director of the Foundation Center’s San Francisco office, discusses on the PhilanTopic blog the progress the center has made in developing its new Glasspockets.org, which highlights efforts by grant makers to explain their work to the public. She names groups that have agreed to participate in the project and encourages others to contribute.
  • The consultant Beth Kanter shares her thoughts for how technological innovations “enhance the sexual health of young people,” having just returned from the SexTech 2010 conference, in San Francisco. Her site includes a link to the presentation she participated in, “Social Media Rock Stars: Widgets, Apps, Contests, and More.”
