Smarter Grantmaking in Challenging Economic Times: Insights for Foundation Leaders, is a background paper issued by Grantmakers for Effective Organizations on how best to help charities weather the recession. Based on conversations with hundreds of philanthropies, the report recommends that grant makers maintain their current levels of giving for at least the next two years. Additional suggestions include encouraging grantees to collaborate with grant makers on creating new programs or improving grant-making strategies. Grant makers are urged to be more flexible in their giving, perhaps providing grants for general operating support or offering loans. Foundations can also reduce the administrative expenses nonprofit organizations incur by streamlining applications and removing restrictions on grants.
