Meeting the Governing Challenge: Applying the High-Impact Governing Model in Your Organization

Your nonprofit organization may have a board full of the brightest, most energetic people in town, but unless the board is governed properly, it will never be as effective as it could be, writes Doug Eadie, a consultant and author.

In this short book, Mr. Eadie describes the elements of an ideally functioning board, beginning with a chief executive who acts as the board’s “team captain,” and ending with the ways board members can be accountable for their decisions and engage in continuing education about nonprofit board governance.

Mr. Eadie also breaks down the types of committees a well-governed board should have, such as a planning and program-development committee, and a performance oversight and monitoring committee. He warns against traditional committees that are narrowly focused on one program, such as a conference or education committee, since, he writes, such a structure tends to make analysis and decision making across an entire organization difficult.

Mr. Eadie includes “success stories” of nonprofit groups that have used his governing approach, and examples of board interaction and conversations using his ideas.
