Criticism for President’s ‘Faith-Based Initiative’

December 19, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

A conservative nonprofit leader last month criticized how the Bush administration has sought to support religious charities, reports a blog written by the Capital Research
Center,
a think tank in Washington.

Robert Woodson, president of the National Center for Neighborhood Enterprise, said President Bush made a “fundamental mistake” by trying to get more government social-service grants to churches, synagogues and other religious groups, writes the blog’s author, Robert Huberty, the center’s executive vice president.

During a speech at the Heritage Foundation, Mr. Woodson said the White House was using its Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, which helps direct such grants, as a political tool. The audience reaction? “Silence followed by nervous laughter,” writes Mr. Huberty.
