- The National Park Foundation has persuaded the Magellan travel company to donate 500 handheld global-positioning-system devices to help hikers and nature enthusiasts navigate national parks and forests. The devices will also help locate people in emergencies. In addition, through December 31 Magellan will donate a portion of the sales from certain handheld GPS devices to the foundation, guaranteeing at least $50,000.
- The president of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, in Menlo Park, Calif., wants to establish an online charity “marketplace” that would bring the benefits of corporate stock markets to the nonprofit world. Paul Brest, in an essay in the foundation’s annual report, said the establishment of a charity marketplace would give people better information about which charities to support. He noted that such information is routinely available to private investors, but hard to find regarding charities. To read his essay: Go to http://annualreport.hewlett.org.
