Highlighting Black Philanthropy

Stating that “black America is in a state of emergency,” an anonymous philanthropist from Washington started a blog this year to chronicle — and inspire — giving by African-Americans.
Black Gives Back spotlights several efforts by black celebrities and others to help fight social problems.
For example, a recent post highlights the work of the actress Kellie Williams, who appeared in the ABC sitcom Family Matters, to set up an after-school program in her hometown of Prince George’s County, Md.
The author says she developed her passion for charitable work after watching crack addiction, HIV/AIDS, and gang violence ravage the nation’s capital.
What do you think? Does a lot of black philanthropy go unreported by the news media? What is needed to inspire more giving by black Americans? Click on the comments link below this post to share your thoughts.
