The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation is venturing into Second Life, an online virtual world, to explore how it can use the Web site to test ideas and reach more people, reports The New York Times.
The foundation has given $550,000 to the Center on Public Diplomacy of the University of Southern California to have discussions and other events in Second Life.
Today, MacArthur’s president, Jonathan Fanton, will — virtually — discuss philanthropy in virtual worlds with Philip Rosedale, founder and chief executive of Linden Labs, which produces Second Life. Mr. Fanton says he hopes the foundation will eventually set up an office and make grants through Second Life or other similar sites.
