Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has picked Jeff Carr, a nonprofit executive with lengthy experience working with religion-based programs that help poor people, to be the city’s new “anti-gang czar,” reports the Los Angeles Times.

Mr. Carr is an ordained minister and chief operating officer at Sojourners/Call to Renewal, a liberal evangelical organization in Washington that promotes social justice. Before joining Sojourners, Mr. Carr was at the Bresee Foundation, a religious group in Los Angeles that provides services in health care, education, job training, technology, and recreation.

Mr. Carr’s new position will focus on gang reduction and establishing youth-development and intervention programs.
