San Francisco Opera Invests in New Technology

The San Francisco Opera is the first opera house in the United States to start using high-definition video in its production, reports The San Francisco Chronicle.
The system includes two large video screens hung from the opera’s balcony ceiling so attendees in even the farthest-back seats can get an up-close look at the performance. The opera was able to install the new system — providing the organization with the tools to produce simulcasts, radio programs, DVDs, and other viewing tools — because of a $3-million grant from the Koret Foundation.
The opera is planning a free simulcast of “Don Giovanni” in four locations around the Bay Area later this month, and the organization’s production director tells the paper it will collect feedback throughout the month on the new system.
