The following awards have been presented for work in advocacy, fund raising, nonprofit leadership, philanthropy, and other areas:

Corporate responsibility. The Stern School of Business at New York U. has presented its 2007 Stewart Satter Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award to Abraham George, founder of the George Foundation, in Bangalore, India. This organization helps impoverished people in rural India and operates the Shanti Bhavan, a residential school for needy children.

Public service. The U. of Minnesota’s Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, in Minneapolis, has presented its Public Leadership Award to the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota for encouraging young women to serve as board members at local charities, and for its community projects for women, research on women’s issues, and advocacy for social change.

Additionally, the Smithsonian Institution’s Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars has recognized B. Francis Saul II with its Award for Public Service and Albert H. Small with its Award for Corporate Citizenship. Mr. Saul, who is the founder and chairman of Saul Centers, a real-estate investment trust in Bethesda, Md., and Chevy Chase Bank, also in Maryland, was honored for his philanthropic support and board service at several civic and nonprofit groups in the metropolitan Washington area. Mr. Small, who founded the Southern Engineering Corporation, in Bethesda, was recognized for his major gifts to the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville, and numerous arts organizations in the Washington area.
