Are Wealthy Americans Selfish?

May 1, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

Do wealthy Americans ignore the hardship of the less-fortunate?

For the author of the blog Quaker at Heart, the answer is yes. “To the wealthy: I’ve lived among you and observed you for most of my adult life. Often you mean well but you turn your heads from scary realities people like myself must face and endure every day,” says the anonymous author, who says he or she is a financially strapped individual suffering from a medical condition.

The blogger created the Web site last month to solicit donations for an unnamed nonprofit publication he or she edits. While searching for benefactors, the blogger writes that he or she refuses to pander to the rich.

Instead of appealing to their philanthropic nature, the blogger writes that well-off people should consider charitable giving as an “insurance” policy.

“It would do you well to take action to have a more just approach to wealth distribution because that would be a kind of insurance for you,” the author writes. “That way, if ever you find yourselves undeservedly in my predicament, you’ll know that those nearby luckier than you will come to your aid.”
