Nobel Laureate Donates Winnings to Calif. Foundation

March 23, 2007

George Smoot, an astrophysicist and a 2006 Nobel Prize winner, has donated most of his $1.4-million in prize money to the East Bay Community Foundation, in Oakland, Calif., reports the Associated Press.

Mr. Smoot, who works at the University of California at Berkeley and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, says he will advise the foundation to use the money to award fellowships to graduate and postdoctoral students.

Another Berkeley scientist, Daniel L. McFadden, a 2000 economics laureate, donated much of his winnings to the same foundation.
