Senator Thurmond’s Relatives Start Charity

The family of the biracial daughter of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond, Republican of South Carolina, is starting a Los Angeles charity to help urban families, reports the Associated Press.
EMW Resource Center, named for Senator Thurmond’s daughter, Essie Mae Washington Williams, would provide health education and other services, the news service reports. Ms. Williams’s daughter and granddaughter are involved in its creation.
Ms. Williams’s mother was a housekeeper in Senator Thurmond’s parents’ home. The senator, who died in 2003, was a former segregationist.
