OBITUARY: Warren Alpert, Philanthropist, 86

Warren Alpert, whose $100-million gift to Brown University was announced in January, died of heart failure last Saturday, in New York, reports The Brown Daily Herald. He was 86.

Mr. Alpert’s gift to Brown will support financial aid, research, a new building, and professorships at its medical school. He had also donated $20-million to Harvard University and $15-million to Mt. Sinai Hospital, in New York, where he died.

Mr. Alpert started Warren Equities in 1950, a large gasoline, convenience-store, and wholesale-petroleum marketer in Providence, R.I. He also founded the Warren Alpert Foundation in 1986.
