President Seeks $1-Billion From Donors for Nation’s Parks

February 9, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

President Bush is asking individuals, corporations, and foundations to give $1-billion to help refurbish the nation’s 390 national parks and monuments by 2016, reports The Washington Post.

The plea is part of Mr. Bush’s effort to improve the parks system, which is under strain from the 270 million visitors it receives annually. Under the proposal, the federal government would match all donations, in addition to contributing $1-billion over 10 years.

While parks advocates applauded the proposal, Rep. Nick J. Rahall II, a Democrat from West Virginia who oversees the House Natural Resources Committee, said it relied too much on philanthropy to take care of a governmental responsibility.
