L.A. Museums Will Share Piece of Art

January 9, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

Two museums in Los Angeles plan to announce their decision to share a large piece of art, “Hell Gate,” by Chris Burden, in an unusual move, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The philanthropist Eli Broad arranged the deal, in which the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art will share the piece in a way not yet determined.

Mr. Broad recently purchased the work, a 28-foot-long model of New York’s Hell Gate Bridge, from John McEnroe, the tennis player, the paper reports.

Museums often share works of art, but not usually two institutions in the same city, and not usually in response to a donor’s request, the Times reports.

Also, Mr. McEnroe’s sale price of $300,000 was below market, Mr. Broad said, indicating that the artwork was intended partially as a gift from Mr. McEnroe.
