Local leaders and activists in South Mississippi believe their region could have received more funds after Hurricane Katrina if it had a stronger network of charities, reports The Sun Herald, in Biloxi.
By last June, organizations in Mississippi had received 3.7 percent of the contributions that foundations and corporations made to the region after the hurricane, while Louisiana had received nearly 9 percent, according to a recent report by the Foundation Center that was cited in the article.
Now, along with efforts to keep rebuilding the damaged regions of the state, recovery groups are working to foster growth in the nonprofit sector there, the paper reports.
