A group of Iraq’s prominent politicians and intellectuals are raising money to build an American University of Iraq, modeled after private universities in Cairo and Beirut, reports The New York Times.
Planners estimate that the university, to be built 150 miles north of Baghdad, will require $200-million to $250-million over the next 15 years. The organizers have $25-million in pledges and donations from the U.S. government and Kurdish sources, the Times reports.
Construction is expected to start in the spring, and the first class to earn bachelor’s degrees would enroll in the fall of 2008.
