Sheila C. Johnson, co-founder of Black Entertainment Television and the president of the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, has given $5-million to the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education for programs to help young children, reports The Washington Post.

The gift will support research on counseling, communications disorders, reading, and therapy for children.

Ms. Johnson said, “We are losing our children at a rapid rate. They are falling through the cracks because we, as educators, the government, we’re being lazy about the educational practice in this country.”

The University of Virginia is currently running a $3-billion capital campaign, reports The Chronicle of Philanthropy.
