Charity Officials Found Guilty of Defrauding Schools

December 6, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

Two men were convicted yesterday in a Minnesota court for their part in a charity scam in which schools were robbed of millions of dollars, reports the Associated Press.

Cameron J. Lewis and his father, J. Tyron Lewis, both of Utah, were found guilty of defrauding more than 600 schools and dozens of banks out of more than $60-million through a program operated by the National School Fitness Foundation, in American Fork, Utah.

The organization promised school districts free fitness equipment if they raised money for anti-obesity efforts. But the equipment the Utah group doled out was paid for by donations from the schools it was courting. The organization went bankrupt in 2004.
