United States Artists, a new nonprofit organization that makes grants directly to artists, made its first awards on Monday, distributing $2.7-million in unrestricted grants to artists working in a wide range of fields, the New York Times reports.
Among the 50 artists who received $50,000 were Chris Ware, an Illinois cartoonist; Basil Twist, a New York puppeteer; and Anna Brown Ehlers, an Alaskan artist who weaves blankets in the tradition of her Northern Tlingit family.
The organization was created this year with $20-million from four foundations—Ford, Prudential, Rasmuson, and Rockefeller—and has also attracted donations from individuals.
