Gates-Supported Charity Buys Vaccines

November 30, 2006

An alliance supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will give $200-million for vaccines, reports The Seattle Times.

Seattle-based PATH is leading the effort, which will buy millions of vials of two new vaccines that combat rotavirus and several strains of pneumonia. Rotavirus is an intestinal bug that causes dehydration, fever, severe diarrhea, and vomiting. It kills approximately 500,000 children per year.

By the end of 2007, the new vaccines will be given to children in South America and other developing countries.
