Habitat Unknowingly Hired Indicted Official

November 6, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

Patricia Bobo, who was accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the Gary Housing Authority, in Indiana, has been working as an employee for Habitat for Humanity International, in Americus, Ga., since January, Indiana’s Post-Tribune reports.

A spokeswoman for Habitat said the group was unaware of the indictment until U.S. marshals showed up at the organization’s offices last week to arrest Ms. Bobo. She had been hired by Habitat to review its spending to be sure it was complying with the terms of its grants.

Ms. Bobo has been charged with two counts of embezzling money from the housing authority and two counts of income-tax evasion. U.S. Attorney Joseph Van Bokkelen said Ms. Bobo stole more than $100,00 from the housing agency.

Ms. Bobo did not comment in the story.
