Public Radio Sees Jump in Online Audience

November 2, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

Public radio stations are planning to invest in Internet streaming and podcast technology in response to the large and growing number of online radio listeners, reports The Wall Street Journal.

The Web site of one of the country’s largest public radio stations, KCRW, in Santa Monica, Calif., had 760,000 unique visitors last month, up from 585,000 the same time last year. Increasing its online presence has helped the station grow its overall audience while commercial broadcasters have seen a decline in audience numbers, the Journal reports.

Ruth Seymour, KCRW’s station manager, says online listeners may help the station attract new sponsors.
