Bloomberg Gave to Nearly 1,000 Groups in 2005

New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, whose estimated wealth is 5.3-billion, gave away nearly $144-million in 2005 to some 987 organizations, reports The New York Times.
Mr. Bloomberg’s giving has increased steadily in recent years in size and scope, but the average contribution to each charity he supports has declined. The Carnegie Corporation of New York administers some giving on his behalf, the newspaper reports.
Mr. Bloomberg, a Republican who some speculate might run for president in 2008, has said he intends to focus on philanthropy after he leaves office. His wealth stems from his financial-information company, founded in 1981.
Mr. Bloomberg’s giving placed him at No. 8 on The Chronicle of Philanthropy’s annual list of the donors who give the most to charity.
