Heifer International to Shrink Plans to Build ‘Global Village’

October 16, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

Heifer International has decided to pare its ambitious Global Village project after donors raised objections to its $64-million cost, reports the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette.

The charity, which donates cattle, rabbits, bees, and other food-producing animals to poor people in the United States and abroad, spent $67-million in 2005, and backers of the organization argued that funds designated for the Global Village could be better spent on relief projects.

The planned village would have consisted of a 45-foot mountain ringed by eight mock villages from different parts of the globe. Each village would have contained educational exhibits and animals.

Heifer International still plans to build the village but at a reduced cost. Officials said construction could begin as early as next year.
