New Orleans Faces Decline in Volunteers

September 18, 2006 | Read Time: 1 minute

Nonprofit groups that provide free house-gutting services to New Orleans residents are unable to meet all the requests for aid because of a lack of volunteers, reports The Times-Picayune, in New Orleans.

While more than 500,000 Americans have donated their time to help the Gulf Coast, charities in New Orleans say volunteers are currently in short supply due to the late-summer heat and a reluctance to come to the city during the peak of hurricane season.

What’s more, requests for house rebuilding have increased after the local government stuck to its August 29 deadline for homeowners to say what they plan to do with their damaged residences.
