The Internal Revenue Service has revoked the charity status of Operation Rescue West, an anti-abortion group, reports The New York Times.
The organization got in trouble by telling donors that they could make tax-deductible gifts for an effort to help defeat Sen. John Kerry in the 2004 presidential election. Charities and churches are not permitted to campaign for or against specific candidates.
The organization said it was not bothered that it lost its charity status and that its operations would continue.
“Losing our tax exemption doesn’t have much of an effect on us,” Cheryl Sullenger, the group’s outreach coordinator, told the newspaper.
